Technology Platform Management – Middleware Service Operations

Since September 2007 I have been based in Singapore working for UBS. My team provides global managed middleware infrastructure and solutions for the Investment Bank.

Prior to this I was working in the Bank’s Application Server Engineering group in London, focussing primarily on IBM WebSphere Application Server and the development of self-service and proactive monitoring tools around this product.

Consultancy

Between 1997 and 2003, I worked on a range of telecoms-related projects both in the UK and in Belgium. Here is a summary of the work that I have been involved in:

  • June to October 2003 – An analyst/developer on a large-scale data warehousing and mining project for a major UK mobile telephone operator – based on client-site in Slough. Technical skills included Ab Initio and UNIX (Korn) shell scripting.
  • July to September 2002 – a key member of the development team, working on an implementation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) for a large Belgian mobile phone operator. This work was based in Brussels and involved development work in Informix ESQL/C, Informix 4GL and Perl. I was also the Test Manager on this project, and assisted the support team to resolve urgent issues relating to the client’s existing customer care and billing system.
  • July to September 2001 – I worked in Brussels on the requirements capture and design for a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) implementation for a large Belgian mobile phone operator. My role involved working with the client on a regular basis, to analyse their requirements and design a solution to integrate the new billing system (Portal Infranet) with the existing proprietary system. I was involved in the technical design relating to the billing, rating, customer subscription maintenance, provisioning and mediation sub-systems.
  • June 1999 to October 2000 – I was involved in a range of projects in the UK:
    • 6 months: Part of the development and deployment teams for a large-scale e-commerce implementation using BroadVision Enterprise & Retail Commerce. Development work in HTML, JavaScript, VBScript, and UNIX shell scripting. Responsible for the configuration and deployment of Sun Solaris, Apache web server and BroadVision on both development and live Sun Enterprise environments. Involved with the configuration of Cisco firewalling, load balancing & routing hardware.
    • 3 months: Design of a fraud management system for a major UK telco. Responsible for database design and technical evaluation of database technologies for high-volume processing relational databases from Oracle and Informix, TimesTen in-memory database, and flat-file indexing techniques. Provided the client with a verbal presentation of the findings at their site, together with a technical paper.
    • 3 months: Design and implementation of an emergency registrations system for a major UK telco. Worked for several weeks at client site to capture requirements and produced detailed solution specifications. Carried out various development work in INFORMIX-4GL and C including the creation of a monitoring tool for the operations team. Produced factory & site acceptance test documentation and worked with the client to achieve sign-off. Provided 24-hour “on-call” support for software.
    • 3 months: Support of a proprietary Customer Care & Billing system for a Belgian mobile phone operator. Development and bug fixes in INFORMIX-4GL and C.
  • June to September 1997 & July to September 1998 – Helpdesk manager for a payroll system support project. Central point of contact between the Logica support team and the client.
